MEET THE TEAM

Growing up in Edinburgh, Scott has an extensive background in professional sport, representing Scotland in Rugby Union at all junior levels from Under 16 to Under 20, and currently plays semi-professionally for local Shute Shield team Hunter Wildfires.

Scott’s coaching experience started at a young age, originally coaching junior rugby and strength and conditioning. Whilst studying Applied Sports Science at the University of Edinburgh, Scott also graduated from the University Gym Instructor program, where he gained his UK Level 2 accreditation. After continuing as an instructor, he also further progressed within the organisation to a senior manager role.

Since graduating, Scott moved to Australia to develop his rugby and career, where he has gained much valued experience in the fitness industry as a Personal Trainer, Sports Coach and Gym Manager.

After initially coming into 98 Newcastle to support his sport injury rehabilitation, Scott started working as a coach and shortly after transitioned into a manager role.

Training and playing a number of different sports while growing up in the Hunter Valley, Matt always knew his love of sport, the team environment and training was going to be what guided his future career focus. From his first ever job as a tennis academy fitness coach through to professional team sport at the highest level, Matt has now worked as a personal trainer, strength & conditioning coach and educator for over 18 years.

While studying at University Matt worked several years in the industry across multiple gyms, small group personal training and large outdoor group fitness. Having worked as a strength & conditioning coach in professional sport for 13 years with experience in several roles across multiple clubs within the NRL, most recently Matt has spent the last two seasons with the New Zealand Warriors as the NRL Senior Athletic Performance Coach.

Off the back of an exciting season in 2023 with the Warriors Matt decided it was the right time to move back home to Newcastle with his family to continue his love of coaching and training in his hometown. He is very excited by the opportunity to work as a member of the 98 family and help build what is sure to be an amazing place for the people of Newcastle.

Lochie was drawn from a young age to pursue high level performance in his various sporting endeavours. For the duration of his years at high school through to his early twenties he had the goal of playing Rugby Union professionally, but after sustaining some longer term injuries this goal shifted. During this time he found he had a deep passion for training in the gym, so he decided to pursue a career in coaching, alongside learning the theoretical side of exercise at university. Around the same time he became involved in Crossfit as a means of maintaining his own athletic expression, and it was here he developed a love for learning higher skill movements whilst also coaching others to do the same. He has since worked in numerous Crossfit and strength and conditioning gyms in both group and 1-on-1 settings, whilst also designing specific training programs for higher level athletes. Lochie’s ethos of coaching is to combine effectively designed training, clearly communicated intentions and an environment that is supportive of individual learning and collective enjoyment.
